EXPLORING MY SOUL
Have you ever sat and pondered one of life's biggest questions…. "WHO AM I" ?
Discovering yourself, knowing who and why you are, is absolutely vital to your whole well-being.
You must be intimately familiar with your personality, your character and what makes your soul "tick". Understanding the intricate workings going on within you is the only way to avoid a life that lacks purpose and direction.
The great 14th Century theologian and philosopher, Thomas Aquinas said “the soul is capable of existing apart from the living body after the death of the body, because the soul is incorruptible. ... The soul is indeed capable of existence apart from the body at death.”
Wouldn’t it be amazing to think that the souls of all the dead from previous generations are still with us, existing apart, yet within our midst.
Perhaps you have unknowingly jeopardised your whole human experience by not understanding the most basic principle of soul awareness and purpose through soul exploration.
When we allow others to dictate who we are, then our lives become a complex labyrinth of internal conflicts and contradictions. Why? Because you are not living as true self. Truly successful people have a sense of their inner soul and, therefore, they make the right choices in life.
So how can you teach yourself to think? I don't mean think in the way in which we’re taught at school. That’s fact-based learning. Today, facts can be Googled within a few seconds. What our schools are doing is teaching facts, rather than teaching children how to think.
In another blog, I quoted the astronomer Clifford Stoll who said that data is not information; information is not knowledge; knowledge in not understanding; understanding is not wisdom.
What we have to teach our children is to learn holistically, to see the facts as part of a much larger, more universal environment of knowledge. If we learn this way of thinking at a young age, it will save us so much anguish in our older years.
The best way is to look into yourself, to be introspective, to search your soul for the answers you seek by means of meditation. Meditating opens the windows to your thoughts and the perspectives through which you see the various aspects of life. I don't mean your normal everyday meditation.
Instead, I mean taking off all your clothing, jewellery, shoes, make-up - the lot, and sitting in front of a large mirror, naked and in complete silence until you begin to feel anything and everything that comes from deep within your soul. Until you can hear the molecules of air gently touching your eardrums.
It is this raw and organic reflection which will give you access into your internal world.
Once you begin to see and feel your true self, you may initially laugh hysterically and you may even feel resentment and self loathing and even anger coming out regarding your own letting down of self. But trust me when I tell you that this is one of the most cathartic experiences you’ll ever have.
You must allow yourself to feel and purge all of these emotions that have been held tightly within you and sometimes they may come from as far away as your childhood.
We must understand that many of the thoughts we have about ourselves and who we are, are a result of parental conditioning, both good and bad, and society”s ideals regarding who we are and should be.
Answering these types of questions will provide you with an understanding of your nature and the way you see the world.
When you strip away the layers of others’ beliefs about ourselves, their ideas and even the lies they tell, then you can begin to see your soul truth.
Sit with this new feeling until you begin to see yourself in a whole new light. It may take ten minutes, or it may take 20, but it will happen.
Once you have reached a place of truth and enlightenment, then you will begin to find the most beautiful place of inner peace.
Settle in and get comfortable with this wonderful new vision of acceptance and unconditional love for yourself.
Tell yourself all the things about yourself that you love, respect and admire. It doesn't matter how trivial or small you may think they are, they are the blueprint of who you are. All of us have aspects about ourselves that are good and positive, focus on those, use these good thoughts to push away all your negative thoughts, bad feelings, self punishments, ill actions, bad choices, questionable behaviours, even abuse towards you, until they no longer exist in your realm. What you don’t feed eventually dies, and you will find that only good things survive and flourish.
As you begin to "feed your soul" with goodness you will grow and expand in appreciation and awareness of your true self. You will become less reactive to what you experience in life and become more introspective and wise. If you look at your childhood in this way you will find it can be useful as a tool for your future choices and decisions but your childhood "will not define you.” Yes, childhood is the stage of life when we begin to form our opinions of ourselves, the world and people, but the events of your childhood through the eyes of an enlightened soul will not carry the burden of shame, neglect, trauma, abuse and negative experiences around with it for a lifetime.
I encourage you to make a mental list of events that changed your life and shaped your ideas and beliefs in a certain way from your childhood. Then imagine an angel or a beautiful spiritual being or the Divine is walking you through them, holding your hand and lovingly guiding you through those experiences. The truth is you were never alone, just as you aren't alone now. When you understand that it is a lack of trust and acceptance of one’s higher self that makes us feel alone in our human experience, you won't ever feel alone again.
When you "explore your soul", "when you trust the process of life; when you live wild and free to be who you be, then this is how and when you will thrive and not just survive.
